What Is Mexican Coffee

Cafe de Olla is a traditional Mexican coffee drink known for its unique blend of spicy and sweet flavors.

It is typically made with dark roast coffee beans, cinnamon, piloncillo (unrefined cane sugar with rich notes of molasses), and sometimes other spices like anise or clove.

It’s typically brewed in a clay pot (olla). This warm and aromatic drink is more than a morning pick-me-up. Itโ€™s a cultural experience passed down through generations, often enjoyed during celebrations or cool mornings.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups of water

  • 1 cup of dark roast coffee beans

  • 1 cinnamon stick

  • 2-3 pieces of piloncillo or brown sugar

  • 1 star anise (optional)

  • 2-3 whole cloves (optional)

  • 1-2 strips of orange peel (optional)

Directions

  • In a large pot, add the water, cinnamon stick, and any additional spices you would like to use (anise, cloves, orange peel).
  • Bring the mixture to a boil and then reduce the heat to low.
  • Add the coffee beans and let them steep in the water for 5-7 minutes.
  • Remove the pot from heat and let it sit for a few minutes to cool down.
  • Strain the coffee through a fine mesh strainer into a separate container.
  • Add the piloncillo (or brown sugar) to the strained coffee and stir well until it dissolves.
  • Serve hot in small clay or ceramic cups to enjoy the traditional Mexican way.

Notes

  • Cafe de Olla is a unique coffee beverage that can be adjusted to suit your taste preferences.
  • You can add more or less sugar, or adjust the amount of cinnamon or other spices to suit your taste.
  • The use of traditional clay or ceramic cups is said to enhance the flavor of the coffee.
  • Cafe de Olla can be enjoyed with a side of Mexican sweet bread, such as conchas or pan dulce.
  • Each piece of piloncillo or brown sugar is about 75 calories.

Substitutions

While authentic Mexican coffee uses piloncillo and a clay pot, you can still enjoy the flavors with simple swaps:

  • Piloncillo Substitute: Use 2โ€“3 tablespoons of dark brown sugar or molasses if piloncillo isnโ€™t available.
  • Cinnamon Stick Substitute: You can use ยฝ to 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon instead, though the flavor will be more intense.
  • Clay Pot Substitute: A regular saucepan or French press works just fine for home brewing.

These substitutions make the recipe more approachable without sacrificing flavor.

Popular Variations

Thereโ€™s no one-size-fits-all recipe for Mexican coffee. Here are a few ways for you to add your own spin:

1. Spiked Mexican Coffee (Cafรฉ Mexicano con Licor)

Add 1 oz of Kahlรบa, tequila, or coffee liqueur for an adult twistโ€”perfect for holiday gatherings or after-dinner drinks.

2. Iced Mexican Coffee

After brewing, let your coffee cool, pour it over ice, and top with a splash of milk or cream. Itโ€™s a great way to enjoy bold, spiced flavors even on hot days.

3. Chocolate Mexican Coffee

Add a small square of Mexican chocolate (like Ibarra or Abuelita) during the brewing process for a rich, mocha-like version with cinnamon and sugar already infused.

Final Thoughts

Bringing the flavors of Mexican coffee into your home is simpler than you might thinkโ€”and incredibly rewarding.

With its warm spices, earthy sweetness, and rich aroma, Cafรฉ de Olla transforms an ordinary cup into a cultural experience.

Whether you stick to the traditional recipe or try one of the fun variations, youโ€™re not just brewing coffeeโ€”youโ€™re creating a moment to savor.

So grab your favorite mug, gather your ingredients, and let the comforting taste of Mexico brighten your day.
