The Origins of Irish Coffee

As the story goes, Irish Irish coffee was invented in 1943 by Joe Sheridan, a chef at Foynes Port in County Limerick, Ireland.

At the time, Foynes was an airport that served flights between the United States and Europe during World War II.

One night, a group of American passengers de-boarded a Pan Am flight on a winter evening.

They were cold and chill of the weather permeanted their bodies.

Joe did his best to make them comfortable.

After making coffee, he added Irish whiskey to warm the group of passengers.

Surprised by the drink, one passenger asked, “Is this Brazilian coffee?”

“No. This is Irish coffee.”, Joe replied.

The coffee was such a hit that they started serving it from the airport terminal where the story began.

The news spread like wildfire, and the drink was served at hotels and restaurants across Ireland.

Today, Irish coffee is one of the most popular coffees enjoyed during St. Patrick’s Day celebrations and at Irish pubs and restaurants worldwide.

Supplies: Milk Frother

Ingredients

  • 1 cup strong brewed coffee

  • 1 TBSP Irish whiskey

  • 1 TBSP brown sugar

  • 1 TBSP heavy cream

  • For the Latte
  • 1 cup frothed milk

  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

  • Toppings
  • Whipped cream

  • Cocoa powder

Directions

  • Brew a strong cup of coffee. Froth the milk until it’s creamy and smooth.
  • In a mug, pour the hot coffee, then add Irish whiskey and brown sugar. Stir until the sugar is dissolved.
  • Add the frothed milk and vanilla extract to the coffee mixture. Gently stir to combine.
  • Top the Irish Coffee Latte with a dollop of whipped cream and a sprinkle of cocoa powder.

Notes

  • Sheridan’s original recipe called for strong hot coffee, Irish whiskey, brown sugar, and heavy cream. The heavy cream is carefully poured over the back of a spoon so it floats on top of the coffee and whiskey mixture.
  • Adding 1/2 cup of whipped cream would add approximately 207 calories.

Detailed Instructions

While an Irish coffee latte sounds fancy, it’s incredibly easy to make at home with a few basic tools.

Start by brewing a strong base—either a double shot of espresso or ½ cup of very strong coffee. Pour the hot coffee into a heatproof mug or latte glass.

Next, if you’re going the traditional route, add 1 to 1.5 ounces of Irish whiskey and ½ to 1 tablespoon of brown sugar, then stir until the sugar dissolves.

If you’re opting for a non-alcoholic version, use an Irish cream syrup or flavored creamer instead. While the coffee rests, steam or froth your milk.

If you don’t have a frother, heat the milk gently in a saucepan or microwave (don’t let it boil), then whisk vigorously or shake it in a jar with a lid for about 30 seconds until frothy.

Pour the steamed milk slowly into your coffee mixture, holding back the foam with a spoon, then finish with a dollop of the remaining foam on top.

The contrast between the creamy milk and bold coffee creates a café-worthy experience.

For an extra indulgent touch, top it off with whipped cream and a pinch of nutmeg or shaved chocolate.

Ingredient Variations

One of the great things about an Irish coffee latte is how it can be customized to suit different tastes and dietary needs.

Traditionally, this cozy drink combines strong coffee or espresso with Irish whiskey and steamed milk, but there are plenty of delicious ways to make it your own.

For a non-alcoholic version, swap the Irish whiskey for an Irish cream-flavored syrup or a splash of coffee creamer with similar flavor notes. You still get the rich, sweet depth without the alcohol, making it a perfect treat any time of day.

For those who are dairy-free, you can easily substitute whole milk with oat milk, almond milk, or coconut milk—each one brings a unique texture and flavor to the latte. Oat milk, in particular, froths beautifully and adds a naturally sweet creaminess that pairs well with coffee and whiskey (or syrup).

You can also play with sweetness levels by using brown sugar, maple syrup, or honey instead of regular sugar.

If you’re after a vegan option, a decaf version, or a boozy dessert drink, this latte recipe is flexible enough to accommodate nearly every preference.

The key is experimenting until you find your perfect balance of bold, creamy, and sweet.

Serving Suggestions

The Irish coffee latte is more than just a cozy drink—it’s an experience, especially when served with a little flair.

Once you’ve poured and frothed your latte, consider dressing it up with thoughtful toppings.

A classic move is to add a generous swirl of fresh whipped cream on top, which melts gently into the hot drink and adds a touch of luxury.

If you’re feeling festive, sprinkle some cocoa powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, or even shaved dark chocolate over the cream for a spiced or dessert-like twist. This drink also pairs beautifully with sweet treats.

Serve it alongside a buttery shortbread cookie, a slice of Irish soda bread, or a warm chocolate lava cake for a truly decadent moment.

Want to elevate your presentation?

Use a clear glass mug so the layers of milk and coffee are visible, and garnish with a cinnamon stick or a drizzle of caramel sauce.

Hosting brunch?

Offer a DIY Irish latte bar where guests can customize their drinks with different milks, syrups, or liqueurs.

Final Thoughts

The Irish coffee latte is a drink that perfectly balances bold espresso, smooth creaminess, and a splash of indulgence.

If you’re wondering about caffeine, yes—this drink does contain it, thanks to the espresso or strong coffee base.

Curious about leftovers?

While it’s best enjoyed fresh, you can store the coffee-and-whiskey base in the fridge for a day or two and reheat it with fresh milk when ready.

Now that you have this recipe, there’s no need to wait for St. Patrick’s Day! 🍀Try making it at home, and you’ll see how easy it is to skip the café and sip something special from your kitchen.
